Print vs. screen based media.

in the past print based media was the most feasable at the time.
try sketch out a mental timeline when it comes to the historical development. show how print derived from nothing. Talk about how there was aways the feel and need to communticate. A method to do so needed to be invented. start talking about drawing on cave walls, sign language in the past and so on.
mental timeline in the intro.
beginning of mark making skills - scroll - codex - mass production print - digital age.
n.b be sure to do proper research so as to have a proper timeline that makes sense. do not confuse different periods. Keep development in history constant.

finalising introduction for hand in
For several decades, editorials such as magazines, books and newspapers have been there to complete(reword such as feed, provide,) the customer satisfaction for one’s reading experience. Print was an innovation( Because it brought about a new shift in the production and distribution of printing) which caught up quick(ly due to being the best method, if not the only one, of mass distributing print which came about, as early as 1041,) especially since the printing press, dating back to as early as 1041. (Since) The last big shift in technology, (in graphic design, dates back to almost a millennia away, The new big shift in technology that was brought about in the last decade, most specifically the introduction of digital screen as a new platform raised a lot of new issues, theories and as well as cultures that refuses the new Digital Era) when it comes to graphic design could date back to mass production in print, and it is for this that the transition from print to screen is such a hot topic today. Screen should not be considered as an alternative to print, even though we use it as one, because in reality the digital screen is an independent medium. However this still leaves us thinking – is the tangibility and said reading experience going out of the window or is it just getting better? Keeping todays advancement in technology in mind, I will be discussing the transition from print to screen. I’ll be doing so by comparing them and keeping in mind design elements such as paper, the grid, feasibility and accessibility.
An overview - good for final presentation.
Intro:
- big shift in technology
- for and against the digital era - hipsters.
- two different medium. should not be seen as rivals.
- Discussion print vs. scren according to space, cost, grid, access.
Historical point of view:
- How it all started - communication. the need to communicate had been evident since the years of the cavemen.
- Print... because no tecnology was available at the time. After years it was very limited therefore, print was mass produced.
Lit Review:
- Brandom Keim article, Stefan sageister made you look by Peter Hall and Jeff Gomez's Print is dead.
- Keim's view: position you are in and that individual person ..(is what makes print better than screen or vice versa)
- Sense of ownership - linked to Sagmeister and Gomez and discussion.
- Sagmeister made you look backs up my essay for what it actually is. Interactive and innovative - the same feeling would not be able to be replicated on screen.
- interaction - feel of paper, getting the book out of the perspex cover, the print on the edge of the paper which when bend shows text.
- Gomez - medium not important, it's the content that counts.
Discuss:
- reading on different platforms - pros and cons.
- pros and cons of the actual two different medium.
- different use - long text vs. articles. (in depth reading vs. skimming through)
- history - not naturally born with the ability to read. Typography is something man made, Reading is a skill we need to practice to attain.
- Price - affordability. ebook prices vs. paper back. magazines online vs printed (monthly membership)
- digital screen at school. why it helps, what to do to make it better, should it be used and why? helps children with cognitive disabilities such as autism and dyslexia (through interactivity of digital screens).
Conclude:
integrate you opinion without saying ''I''.
- both need to improve. You can compare on contrast them for ages but at the end of the day one needs to remember that they are different medium. Instead of lashing out at the different two, the best solution would be to get both aspects and come up with a solution for them to work best together. Why attack something when together, you can make them better and lead to a better future?
- There is no real telling of what is going to happen next. People are inventing and proposing ideas, and technology just keeps getting better. Therefore we never know what concepts and ideas people are going to be proposing in aid of the the mediums heading to the better.

Pointers to keep in mind whilst developing essay + hand in.
Thought out the last few lessons here are a few notes I took down on my iPhone so as to remember what to put in my essay, what is the most important, what to improve and what may be done in order to obtain a distinction.
Range of technique and visual languages - your ability to put together posts blogs and essay.
Visually - not only mr. Formosa. Text under image indentation etc. for pass
Historical development has to be well interpreted. Part of your second paragraph just after info Insomma after why we are writing the essay needs to be
Mostly electronic info which is ok if not paperbased.
Show ability of Compton past with technology and what is happening NOW.
What have others already found in your topic. Don't just use other people's words - do it intelligently. Show ability to process information and include your opinion without saying in my opinion.
Draw independent conclusions.- show your opinion by comparing and contrasting what shows your conclusion.
When you are reviewing the information you have read you need to do it critically. Process it - question it. Obviously support info by what other critics have said.
Use effective judgement. Not just one source .. Use a range of sources, even for just one argument.
Distinction -
Your own work which you have research you show the ability to reflect on it
"Whilst this saying this, the other is saying .. "Support by others
Be On time.
Convergent and lateral thinking.
Thinking in terms of other situations and compare and contrast and find other links.
Finding all the possible situations Behind a certain topic.
-----
Recap.
Remember to be objective - your opinion needs to be backed by info and don't give a personal biast. Objective NOT subjective.
Find examples of positive and negative values in the area of study.
Make sure that you show that you are backing up your info- if you feel strongly about something find somekne that does so too.
Intro - states tor position without stating it. Don't literally say you agree... The tendency is towards your opinion.
Use historical background to back you up.
Compare and contrast the opinion of experts - both sides of the coin.
Compare your arguments with others - findings statistics visuals etc
Do not forget to include examples! Give images which support your argument!
Flow of the essay is super imp! The reader needs to enjoy reading your essay! It needs to flow logically and need to understand the graphic design behind it!
Get someone to proof read - you can even add a glossary of terms. Help your reader feel at ease.
Analyses points separately - move into the paragraph with another point. Show your reader you will be discussing the next point without directly saying it. Hint at what is going to be discussed next.
Eg. .. When one starts discussing typography .." And in next pAr. Start talking about type in next par.
Reference throughout !! Internal reference. Integral or non integral. One or the other in each paragraph!
(Surname, date ) non integral.
If you use it as part of the sentence when the im authors name is part of your internal structure
According to abela (2007)...
You've written the essay.. Prepared it. Do NOT rely on autocorrect! PROOF READ.
Syntax. Make sure the sentences are structure properly. Divide essay into paragraphs - proper ones. Don't present two liners. You cannot develop An argument in a couple of lines.
Font. Not smaller than 12 for Sharon.
Short quote .. Open inverted commas.. Write your quote ...
If quote is longer than 40-50 words. Sep. indent from both sites.
When you quote- is of the opinion... Or discusses.. Or States that.

brainstorming the historical aspect.
The whole aspect of passing on info from one person to another has been since cavemen times – illustrating stories on wall – talk about mark making skills, keeping record and history has started from the cavemen. At that time there wasn’t the choice of medium, then invention of paper scripts etc that helped media become more flexible and tangible and workable.
(paper itself became mass produced – up till digital age paper was the most exploited medium. Only medium one would use. – (try find sources – the whole need of moving content for moving from one gen to another - WHY THE NEED)
cave painting- goodinformation on books of animation.
Till the digital Age. Inevitable that paper was used because it was the only way around expressing themselves to others. Medium is believed to actually make paper obsolete – screen takes over. ( no need to source_ being discussed throughout essay and sourced then)
Several designers (mention maybe one designer – then talk about what he says in the essay against others) have written have written about how this medium could potentially replace paper and books. – will speak about this throughout the essay then..
Mention Gutenberg, printing press (led to mass production) – Toulouse Lautrec (mass produced posters)
Print- gold foil embossing metallic, uv varnish – physical elements.
Screen is going to give you sound and vision, print gives u visual, the visual can be enhanced through different print eg, embossing, texture, every diff texture because of embossing, print itself, smell.. paper of the new book, changes from book to book, add taste
Can add taste and smell because you have edible paper, scented, paper
5 senses. Smell taste touch
Source no need. – Could place after feasibility.
